Why are 4x4 tyres different from standard car tyres? Generally 4x4 vehicles are larger than standard cars and also they can be used in extreme off road conditions which means they have to cope with a variety of terrains and surfaces. They are also generally much larger than standard vehicles tyres in both height and width.
With off road use 4x4 tyres require different characteristics than normal car tyres as they need to cope with a variety of surfaces. Even light off road use might mean your 4x4 tyres have to put up with mud or deep water so deeper treads are required, where as severe off road use might mean the require a tread pattern which grips the terrain surface whether it be rock, deep mud or even sand.
As well as superior off road grip 4x4 tyres are also re-inforced along the side wall to handle the extra weight of the four by four vehicle and typical extra roll weight produced as the vehicle rolls on its suspension in corners. This is because of the longer and sometimes softer suspension on four by four vehicles.
4x4 tyres come in a number of varieties from performance and luxury 4x4 tyres which are for four by four vehicles which are used mainly on road, there performance mimicking normal car road tyres with around 80% road use to 20% off road use.
All terrain and mud-terrain tyres are designed more for off road use, they are typically fitted to Land Rover Defenders and are designed for 80% off road and 20% on road use. While they can be used on road their characteristics are such that road noise is greater as are stopping distances because of their aggressive tread pattern which makes them good off road.
